On July 21st, Clarissa Cervantes, Chair of the Silver Strand Art Group, led participants on a tour of the Culver City art galleries on south La Cienega Boulevard. This area has become an “in” location for seeing contemporary art. They started things off by meeting for lunch at nearby EM’s Artist Cafe on La Cienega. The cafe is trying to create an atmosphere similar to European art cafes and places like them which used to be prevalent in Los Angeles in 1950s and ’60s. Art hangs on the walls and the Cafe hosts live bands and discussion groups. The food is fresh, with a menu offering burgers (beef, ahi tuna. salmon or buffalo), salads and pastries. The staff were warm and friendly, especially the owner who came out to talk to the group.
At each gallery they visited, they explained to the receptionist that they were art enthusiasts from Marina Del Rey and would appreciate being led through the exhibition. As a result, they were treated to a docented tour of each gallery which enhanced their appreciation of the art on display.

This was the third event organized by Clarissa, with the help of Nora Nicosia, for the Silver Strand Art Group. The next tour will take place in September or October. If you would like to be notified, please leave a comment below.
With thanks to Nora and Clarissa for their notes on the tour and to Clarissa for her photographs.
