Cinemark Corporation will soon begin construction of an all-digital, nine-screen movie theater in Playa Vista. Called NextGen, it will be comparable to the ArcLight in Hollywood, the Landmark in West L.A. and the Hughes Center multi-screen theaters. It will include a cocktail lounge and the ability to order tickets on line. Like these theaters, the 9-screen NextGen will offer stadium seating, 3-D capability, along with superb projection and accoustics. For those of us who have fought traffic to get to ArcLight, the Hughes Center and the Landmark, this will be a blessing. It is 10 minutes away from the Silver Strand and parking should be plentiful. The theater is scheduled to open in May, 2014.
For those of you who haven’t explored Playa Vista, it’s worth a visit. There was a great deal of controversy about the development and its usurping of a large part of the remaining Ballona Wetlands. Nevertheless, it’s here to stay, so we might as well take advantage of it.
I have two friends, one a 30-something couple with kids, the other a single in her late 70s. They both love living there. There is a nice restaurant called Piknic, yes it is spelled that way, which is casual, dog and family friendly, has outdoor seating, good American food and a full bar. It is particularly nice for brunch.
