Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles Parks Foundation have announced that the City of Los Angeles is ear-marking 53 vacant parcels to be developed as pocket parks over the next two years. The parks will be funded by public, private, foundation and corporate sponsorship. Each park takes between 4 and 6 months to build. The Department of Recreation and Parks hopes to open 16 of them by July 2013. One of the parks will be on a vacant lot at 3503 Via Dolce. Councilman Bill Rosendahl was instrumental in ensuring that District 11 got two of the parks. He also secured funding for design and submittal of a Coastal Development Permit for the Via Dolce Park. The park, which is about 1/4 acre in size, is a short walk from the Silver Strand and adjacent to the Grand Canal. Thanks to Silver Strand resident, Jessica Schwarz, for bringing this to our attention.
