Nora Nicosia, Marilee Karlsen and Clarissa Cervantes invite you join them on Saturday, February 23, 2013 for “Bridging Homeboy Industries,” a tour of Homeboy Industries in Westchester and downtown Los Angeles, sponsored by Otis College of Art and Design. Meg Linton, Otis Director of Galleries and Exhibitions, and Curator Annie Buckley, will lead the tour. February seems a long way away, but because the tour will not be limited to our Silver Strand Art Group, we suggest you make your reservations NOW. See below.
Homeboy (& Homegirl) Industries is a very successful youth program, founded in 1992 by Father Greg Boyle, S.J. It is designed to help high-risk young people, including former gang members, gain employment skills by working for pay in Homeboy’s cafes, bakeries, farmers markets, catering, and clothing merchandising. It also offers educational programs, tattoo removal and legal advice. It has been praised by Laura Bush, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, among many others. One of their cafes is in City Hall.
We will begin at Otis College, 9045 Lincoln Blvd in Westchester, touring the Ben Maltz Gallery, followed a bus trip to the Homeboy Industries facility for Brunch at the Homegirl Café and a tour of Homeboy Industries led by the curator and artists.
On the way back to the Otis campus, we will view two significant murals created by the featured artists in collaboration with local artists and community members.
Featured artists include Fabian Debora, Alex Kizu, and Juan Carlos Munoz Hernandez.
The tour includes all of the lectures by the curators and artists, bus transportation, brunch and insurance. The cost is $25 and $14 for insurance. The total for the 9am to 3pm six-hour day is $39.
The bus is limited to 22 people. Transportation to Otis College will be on your own. We can arrange carpooling if necessary so that you can arrive at Otis before the bus leaves at 9pm. Please let Marilee Karlsen know ASAP if you would like to join the tour or leave a comment below and we will forward to her.
