The Wicked Witch, the Silver Strand’s Halloween mascot, has been released from the hospital and is now back on her perch on Northstar Mall. Following several joint replacements, she is noticeably friskier. On instructions from her physical therapist, she is turning this way and that every few seconds in preparation for her Halloween fly over in 2013.

The influx of migratory ducks to the Ballona Lagoon on the Silver Strand is now in full swing including the red-breasted Merganser, Widgeon, and Bufflehead ducks. A gorgeous great blue heron has taken up his post on the Lagoon at the entrance to the path at Via Dolce. Western sandpipers, long-billed Dowitchers, Killdeer and one Black Bellied Plover have also been observed by Silver Strand birders.  The water is being kept low which is good for shorebirds as it makes their food more accessible.
