The first of the five 2014 Silver Strand mini-Block parties, Ketch and Lighthouse Malls and Adjacent Roma Court, was a huge success with over 74 neighbors attending. There was music and entertainment for kids including a pinata, a drawing and paint table, beads and mustaches and beards. This was a potluck lunch and neighbors contributed a delicious spread including salsa and chips, chicken nuggets to sushi, many Mexican specialties and superb desserts. Heavy-duty margaritas and tequilla were on hand along with soft drinks. The hosts of the Ketch/Lighthouse/Roma Cinco di Mayo mini-Block party were SSMHOA Block Captains, Penny Akashi, Eileen Nugent, Cindy Carlin, Beth Holden-Garland, Ann Murpha and Eileen Nugent. They did a fabulous job in putting the event together and made it all seem as easy as pie (although we know it involved a lot of work).
The Silver Strand News is grateful to Jo Tashima and Dan Avila for their photographs of the party.

Beth Holden-Garland, with help from husband Gary, their children Jackson and Avalon, and Beth’s parents Richard and Dale Holden, did a great job on decorations with Mexican flags and streamers everywhere in evidence. They also put out a great black and white vintage photo of Pancho Villa, a hero of the Mexican Revolution, which they bought several years ago in Puerto Vallarta:
The Silver Strand social events, including the mini-Block parties and the Annual Silver Strand Block party, all initiated by Nora Nicosia, SSMHOA Board Member and Chair of the Block Captain Committee, have provided settings in which neighbors and their children can get to know each other. Silver Strand residents now know that real people live behind those closed garage doors and locked gates – people who are interesting and who may become friends, along with their children who might want to play together in a safe environment. One of the interesting things that the parties have demonstrated is the change in demographics in the Silver Strand. While there are still many residents who have lived here since the 1980s when the Strand was first developed, we are now seeing an influx of younger folks with children.
Here are some of the youngest residents who attended the party:
There were plenty of adults there too:

A very popular activity carried over from last year was the Pinata.
No Silver Strand Party would be complete without our Magnificent Canine Residents:
A great time was had by one and all, including an unexpected party crasher.
