Clarisssa Cervantes, SSMHOA Block Captain,  found a delightful spot for the first Silver Strand Hiking Group Event which she organized. Here is her report:

We had a wonderful time at Will Rogers State Historic Park. The weather was great for hiking. We got to exercise, visit with neighbors and also got an unplanned tour of the Will Rogers Ranch House which most people didn’t know was even there and open to the public. It was great to be surrounded by the Santa Monica mountains and the view of the Los Angeles from the top  of the the trail was priceless. Afterwards we had a great lunch at Patrick’s Roadhouse. Afterwards we had a great lunch at Patrick’s Roadhouse, an L.A landmark, with a great selection of California Cuisine.

Will Rogers displaying his roping skills.

[Editors Note]: Will Rogers was a famous American humorist, movie star, radio broadcaster,  journalist and horseman. His roping skills were extraordinary. His 186 acre Will Rogers State Park in Pacific Palisades, above Sunset Boulevard, includes the ranch house  he built for his wife and children in the early 1920s, stables and a polo field that still holds matches on the weekends The house retains the original furnishings and looks as it did when the family lived there from 1928 until 1944.  Unlike so many homes of the rich and famous in the 1920s, the Rogers house was built and furnished for the comfort of the family and their many guests. Rogers was an Oklahoma native, of Cherokee descent, who eschewed  pretense of any kind.   Tragically, he died in Alaska in 1935 at the age of 55 in the crash of a small plane piloted by his  aviator friend Wiley Post. His widow, Betty Rogers, deeded the ranch to the state of California in 1944. For further information on hours, polo matches and tours, see:

Among his many famous quotes:

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people that they don’t like.”

“If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”

“There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither works.”

“The minute you read something that you can’t understand, you can almost be sure that it was drawn up by a lawyer. ”
